Real Indiana: The Pig Adventure

October 24, 2016

FAIR OAKS, Ind. - Along I-65 in northwestern Indiana you'll find The Pig Adventure at Fair Oaks Farms.

"When we designed and built the place, our goal was to open our doors, to educate the public and to show people what we do," said Nick DeKryger, Director of Finance.

"So we built a farm, a farm that's just like any other farm until you hit about eight feet up in the air, and then from there up we built a museum that blended the two for an experience that allows people to see inside a farm in a way that's never been done before," said John Hook, Vice President of Pig Production, BMC.

"A lot of the regular families that come in here don't know a lot about modern pig farming so we want to incorporate a lot of fun displays and lots of fun, interactive things that children and parents can do," said Sarah Babulic, Manager of the Pig Adventure.

Popular areas of The Pig Adventure include the ropes course, the ultrasound, and the birthing area.

"The people that take care of the animals really care about them and pigs provide us more than just food," said Babulic.

"The pig is an amazing contribution to human existence. That's why we take care of them. That's something that we're very proud of," said Hook.

"We've been with Indiana Farmers Mutual Insurance for about 13 years now and they cover all of our pigs and all of our pig buildings that we house the pigs in," said DeKryger. "Indiana Farmers Mutual is very easy to work with and they were very good at putting a policy together for us."
