Real Indiana: Competition BBQ

August 03, 2016

FRANKLIN, Ind. - A little bit of smoke, a little bit of heat, and a little bit of sweet.

Meet Gary Lewis of Farmer's Retreat Smokin' BBQ and get a behind-the-scenes look at competition barbecue in Indiana.

"I'm from a large family, so whenever we'd have family reunions I was always cooking. So then when I retired, my son got me a smoker and I just got hooked on it."

At Gary's second competition event, they came in second in ribs using a family recipe barbecue sauce.

Barbecue is judged for appearance, taste, and tenderness, and everyone's taste is different. "Everyone wants to win. It's a sport," said Gary.

But competition events are also about people too.

"Everyone here, they're all friends," Gary said. "We all socialize with each other. Just great people to be around."

"Indiana Farmers Mutual Insurance has been with us through the good times and the bad times. Us being a policyholder with them for over 25 years, they were excited to be a part of this, and we are too," said Gary.
